About the region

Geography: Friuli Venezia Giulia, in northeastern Italy, has a highly diverse landscape of coastline, lagoons, plains, hills and an extensive Alpine area. The region covers around 7,924 km², 43% of which is mountainous. Of its roughly 1.2 million inhabitants, only 5.2% live in mountain municipalities, which have seen progressive depopulation in recent decades.

Climate challenges in Friuli Venezia Giulia

• Changing weather patterns (rising temperatures, more frequent heatwaves, declining snowfall) affecting water availability and increasing energy demand for cooling and heating
• Higher risk of natural hazards (drought, wildfires, extreme weather) affecting tourism and wine production
• More frequent heatwaves impacting public health

What has been done so far

Friuli Venezia Giulia is currently collecting climate data, analysing risks and engaging local stakeholders.

Key topics include wildfire prevention, agroforestry and nature-based solutions (NbS)
Following the approval of the regional law FVGreen (2023), the region began drafting its regional strategy and plan for climate change mitigation and adaptation
A regional project presentation and a stakeholder meeting have been held
Ongoing and completed projects with similar objectives have been mapped, and the work is being aligned with the regional climate law
Sustainable tourism and water management are under consideration, alongside other possible interventions emerging from the Replication Labs
Replication activities could focus on the Carnia mountain area in the north-west of the region (no final decision yet)
Further stakeholders are being brought in, including mountain communities, municipalities, small business associations, and the regional forecasting, tourism and environmental agencies

The region aims to replicate successful strategies from the demonstrator regions to strengthen resilience in its Alpine territories.
