In the Alpine area heat-related risks are generated by the increase of temperature trend and higher frequency and intensity of heat waves. Higher temperatures affect the snow cover, which impacts the tourism sector at low altitudes. An increase in precipitation in winter and a decrease in summer is predicted. This could cause drought problems that strongly affect the agriculture sector, especially in the central plains of the region with a deep-water table. Large quantities of rain in short periods could be especially dangerous in alpine areas characterised by steep valleys, which would increase the risk of landslides.
